Nestled in the central piedmont region of North Carolina, Orange County contains a mix of historic college towns, urban centers, and rural agricultural communities. The county was established in 1752 and is home to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the oldest public university in the United States.

The city of Chapel Hill serves as the county seat and is deeply enriched by the presence of UNC. Downtown Chapel Hill features boutiques, bookstores, and a vibrant foodie scene. The nearby town of Carrboro began as a mill town and is now a hip, artistic community popular with college students and young families.

Also influenced by the university is the town of Hillsborough, located in the Eno River Valley. Hillsborough retains its historical charm with roots dating back to Colonial times. The town of Mebane straddles the Alamance County border and combines small-town living with suburban expansion.

Further north, the towns of Efland and Cedar Grove are more rural agricultural communities surrounded by rolling farmland. And scenic hiking trails wind through the hills and forests of the Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area. With its blend of education, arts, agriculture, and nature, Orange County encapsulates much of the culture and heritage of North Carolina.
