Union Township is a township in Union County, New Jersey, United States. In the 18th century, the area that is now Union was then called Connecticut Farms. The township was named for Union Village, which itself was named for its location in between the towns of Rahway and Clark.
The township's population grew from 1,000 to 6,000 during the 19th century due to improved transportation infrastructure and industrialization. The area was also home to American Revolutionary War battles and skirmishes—most notably the Battle of Springfield (1780).
The construction of railroads through the township transformed it from agricultural land into a manufacturing hub. In 1859, three small villages were established within the township: Springfield (now known as Kenilworth), Cranford and Plainfield. These four communities would eventually become part of the new Union Township on March 4, 1861.
Union has been described as "a city without limits" because it has grown so much since its founding in 1793; however, it still retains its small-town charm with tree-lined streets and historic architecture.
