San Marino is a small affluent city located in Los Angeles County, California. It was incorporated in 1913 and is one of the oldest cities in the San Gabriel Valley. The city was designed to resemble an Italian village and early settlers wanted a peaceful community with large properties.
In the 1920s, San Marino became home to the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens, a cultural center with rare books, art, and over a dozen themed gardens.
Government
San Marino has a City Council-City Manager form of government. The city council consists of 5 members who are elected at-large. The council appoints a professional city manager to oversee day-to-day operations.
Geography
San Marino is only 3.76 square miles in size. It is bordered by Pasadena, San Gabriel, Alhambra and South Pasadena. The city has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
Demographics
As of the 2020 census, San Marino had a population of 13,219 residents. Over 75% of residents are Asian, mostly Chinese Americans. The median household income is $147,369 which is much higher than the US median.

The San Marino Unified School District oversees 3 schools in the city. San Marino High School is consistently ranked as one of the top schools in California and the United States. Over 95% of students graduate and go on to college.
