The city was created 138 years ago in 1885.

Palmdale is a city located in northern Los Angeles County within the Antelope Valley region. With over 150,000 residents, Palmdale is the sixth largest city in L.A. County. It sits in the southernmost tip of the Mojave Desert.

History

Palmdale began as a sparsely inhabited desert town near Edwards Air Force Base. Palmdale incorporated as a city in 1962 and soon after major aerospace companies like Lockheed and Boeing opened facilities.

This spurred incredible population growth turning Palmdale from a Town of 5,000 in the 1960s to a major city by the 1980s. Palmdale became popular as an affordable suburb with a desert climate.

Economy and Industry

Aerospace development has dominated Palmdale’s history and is still the largest industry today. Manufacturing and shipping businesses have also emerged to diversify the economy.

Palmdale’s population is quite diverse with prominent Latino, African American and Asian communities. Home prices are also relatively affordable for the L.A. region.
