The city was created 136 years ago in 1887.

Pomona is a city in eastern Los Angeles County, California. With a population of over 150,000 residents, it is the seventh largest city in L.A. County. Pomona is located between the Inland Empire and Greater Los Angeles.

History

Pomona was founded in 1875 and named after the Roman goddess of fruit trees. The first settlers were attracted by the area's fertile soil and agricultural promise. Pomona quickly became known for its fruit orchards and vegetable farms.

The city incorporated in 1888 just before the arrival of the transcontinental railroad which accelerated Pomona's growth. The California Polytechnic State University was established in Pomona in 1938.

Local Economy

Though no longer focused on agriculture, two major California State Universities - Cal Poly Pomona and Western University - drive Pomona's local economy through employment and the student population.

Pomona also contains pharmaceutical companies, manufacturing plants, and retail centers that provide jobs. However, Pomona struggles with higher than average unemployment and poverty rates compared to surrounding areas.
