Elizabeth is a city in Union County, New Jersey situated just west of Staten Island. With over 128,000 residents, Elizabeth is New Jersey's fourth largest city.

History

Elizabeth was originally called Elizabethtown and founded in 1664. It was one of the first English speaking settlements in New Jersey. Early development was spurred by transportation access to Staten Island and New York.

Heavy industry like sewing machine manufacturing, ironworks, and shipbuilding helped Elizabeth grow rapidly during the Industrial Revolution era. By the mid 20th century, the city had diversified into other manufacturing sectors.

Economy

Although no longer a major industrial hub, Elizabeth still has a strong manufacturing and logistics base today. Major employers include Wakefern Food Corporation, Trinitas Regional Medical Center, Elizabeth Public Schools, Maher Terminals, and Apple Inc.

Other important industries include transportation, healthcare, education, and retail. The city benefits from its location at a major northeast transportation nexus.
