Compton is a city located in southern Los Angeles County, founded in the late 1800s as an agricultural community. It was incorporated as a city in 1888 and by the 1950s had developed into a predominantly middle-class suburb.
Major demographic changes occurred during the 1970s and 1980s. African Americans became the majority population, reaching over 90% by the late 1980s. Compton struggled with poverty, crime, and gang violence during this time. However, community-driven revitalization efforts began in the 2000s.
