History

Union County was formed on November 2, 1829, from sections of Hempstead and Clark counties. It was named after the **union** of citizens who lived in the area. The original county seat was on the southern border at Champagnolle. In 1835 the county seat was moved to the **present-day location** of El Dorado.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Union County has a total area of **1,039 square miles**, of which 1,034 square miles is land and 5.3 square miles (0.5%) is water. It is the **fourth-largest county** by area in Arkansas. The county is located in South Arkansas. It is bordered by Columbia County to the north, Ouachita County to the east, Calhoun County to the southeast, Bradley County to the south, and Claiborne Parish, Louisiana to the southwest.

Demographics

As of the 2020 census, there were **39,714 people** and 14,912 households in the county. The racial makeup of the county was **64.7% White**, 30.7% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.6% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. The median income for a household in the county was **$42,581** and the median family income was $51,bj564. About 15.2% of families and 19.2% of the population were below the poverty line.
