Smith County is located in northeastern Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 234,906 making it the 16th most populous county in Texas. The county seat is Tyler.
Smith County was established in 1846 and named for James Smith, a general during the Texas Revolution. Tyler was designated as the county seat in 1846.
The county economy was initially agricultural. In the 1930s, oil was discovered which boosted growth. The population has risen steadily over the decades.
