After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 235,806 inhabitants. Its county seat is Tyler. The county was created 178 years ago in 1845.

History

Early history

Smith County was established in 1846 and named for James Smith, a general during the Texas Revolution. Tyler was designated as the county seat in 1846.

Growth

The county economy was initially agricultural. In the 1930s, oil was discovered which boosted growth. The population has risen steadily over the decades.
