Madison County is located in the heart of southeast Idaho along the Montana border. It was settled in the 1860s by Mormon pioneers who established communities like Rexburg. The area remained quite remote and agrarian until modern development came after WWII.
Today, the county is anchored by Brigham Young University-Idaho which influences the local economy and culture.
