The city was created 64 years ago in 1961.
Sunrise is a city located in Broward County, Florida. The area was originally swampland when developers began draining the land in 1960 to establish a planned residential community.
Sunrise was incorporated as a city in 1961 as developers aimed to create a master-planned suburban community. The city grew steadily through the end of the 20th century.
Major projects included the construction of the Sawgrass Mills mall in 1990, which brought commerce and tourism. Rapid population growth continued through the 2000s.
Today, Sunrise has swelled to a population over 95,000 residents. It is located just west of Fort Lauderdale in the Miami metropolitan area.
