History
Hartford was founded in 1635 and named after Stone, England – the birthplace of early settler Reverend Thomas Hooker. It emerged as an important center for government, insurance, manufacturing, and transportation.
As Connecticut’s capital since 1875, Hartford houses the state’s government. It served as a stop on early colonial trade routes and railroad lines connecting New England.
