The city was created 140 years ago in 1883.
West Palm Beach is a city located along Florida's Atlantic coast in Palm Beach County, adjacent to Palm Beach island. With over 110,000 residents, it is the oldest and most populous city in the county.
History
The area was originally settled in the late 1800s as a farming community growing pineapple and coconuts. Henry Flagler's railroad led to the city’s founding and growth as a winter resort for northerners.
West Palm Beach incorporated in 1894 and became the commercial hub for the Palm Beaches. It emerged as a center for banking, commerce, government, and transportation.

Major employers today are Palm Beach County School District, Tenet Healthcare, United Technologies, Florida Power & Light, and City of West Palm Beach.
Leading industries include tourism, healthcare, financial services, aerospace technology, and retail. Housing costs are very high due to demand and amenities.
