Walker County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 67,861 and a population density of 33 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 72,164 inhabitants. Its county seat is Huntsville. The county was created 180 years ago in 1846.

Walker County is located in southeastern Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 73,295 making it the 28th most populous county in Texas. The county seat is Huntsville.

History

Early days

Walker County was established in 1846 following Texas' annexation by the United States. It was named after Samuel Hamilton Walker, a Texas Ranger captain.

Prison establishment

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice was established in Huntsville in 1849. This brought substantial growth and economic development.

Later events

Sam Houston State University opened in 1879, further expanding Huntsville's importance.

The extensive Texas prison system looms large over the local economy. Over 14,000 people work for the prison and criminal justice facilities in Huntsville.
