History

Sterling Heights was incorporated as a city in 1968. Prior to that, the area consisted of several separate communities including Sterling, Utica, and Van Dyke. The name “Sterling Heights” was chosen through a vote to reflect the desire to unite the communities into one unified city.

Early settlers were attracted to the area by the fertile land and abundant natural resources. By the early 20th century, the automobile industry helped the city thrive as a bedroom community for auto workers commuting to Detroit. Through the 1950s and 1960s, the city saw rapid growth as Detroit residents migrated to the suburbs.

Economy

The presence of major automotive facilities including the Chrysler Technical Center and General Dynamics tank plant provided an economic base in the early years. While manufacturing is still important, the city's economy has diversified significantly.

Today, Sterling Heights has a robust advanced manufacturing and research economy centered around defense, automotive technology, robotics, and advanced electronics. Major employers include Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Mercedes Benz Financial Services, Magna Electronics, Fanuc Robotics, and the U.S. Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command.

Popular attractions include the Sterling Heights Nature Center which has wildlife exhibits and wooded hiking trails, the Dodge Park Farmers Market featuring local produce and crafts, the UCS Science Discovery Center with hands-on science exhibits, and the Warren Mott Farmers Market held weekly during summer.

The city has an extensive parks system with over 1,000 acres of parkland. Major parks include Dodge Park, Clinton River Park, and Nelson Park.

Conclusion

With its diversity of industries, growing high-tech sector, plentiful parks and attractions, and location in metro Detroit, Sterling Heights offers its residents a high quality of life and opportunities for prosperity.
