Nederland, Texas is a city in Jefferson County, located approximately 30 miles southwest of Houston. The population was 18,856 at the 2020 census.
The city was settled in 1897 along what is now Boston Avenue and incorporated in 1940. It was settled by Dutch immigrants on land sold by the Kansas City Southern railroad.
The city's name means "Lowlands" in Dutch, a reference to its location along swampy flats at the foot of Fannin Mountain. The area had been part of Stephen F. Austin's colony but was uninhabited when it was purchased by the railroad company around 1900.
