The neighborhood was developed in the early 1920s as one of the first "suburbs" of New Orleans. Wealthy New Orleanians built large homes in Metairie Terrace, drawn by its location near prestigious Metairie Golf Club and Metairie Race Track.
The area grew rapidly through the 1950s and 1960s. Grand avenues like Metairie Road were lined with mansions, some built in the Colonial Revival style. Metairie Terrace became known as an upscale, tranquil community.
