Newark is a city located in the county of Essex in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Its population at the 2010 census was 277,140 and a population density of 4,134 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 282,520 inhabitants.
The city was created 401 years ago in 1624.
Newark was established in 1666 and played a role in the American Revolution as well as the industrial revolution in the 19th century. Located just 8 miles from New York City, Newark became an important industrial hub, home to railroads, ports, and manufacturing.
However, the city declined in the 1950s through the 1990s due to suburbanization, civil unrest, and aging infrastructure. Recently Newark has been revitalizing through new development and investment.
