Montgomery is a city located in the county of Montgomery in the U.S. state of Alabama. Its population at the 2010 census was 205,764. After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 196,268 inhabitants.

The city was created 209 years ago in 1816.

Founded along the Alabama River, Montgomery served as the first capital of the Confederate States of America in 1861. This historic city offers insights into Civil Rights history along with cultural attractions.

Civil Rights Memorials

Montgomery played a central role in the Civil Rights Movement and visitors can explore that history at sites like the Rosa Parks Museum dedicated to the activist who refused to give up her bus seat in Montgomery in 1955.

The Dexter Parsonage Museum honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who served as pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church during the Montgomery bus boycotts. The parsonage houses interpretive exhibits about Dr. King's life.
