Greenville is a city located in Hunt County, Texas. It was founded in 1846 by Thomas Stone and James Howe. The city was named after Thomas Stone's hometown of Greenville, Mississippi.

Greenville served as a trading center for the cotton plantations in the area throughout the 1800s. The population grew steadily through the late 1800s and early 1900s. The discovery of the rich East Texas Oil Field in 1930 spurred major growth and economic development in Greenville.
