Founding of Elk Grove
The area where Elk Grove now sits was originally home to the Miwok Indians. The first European settlers came to the area in the 1840s when John Sutter established his ranch in nearby Sacramento. Elk Grove itself was founded in 1850 when a hotel called the Elk Grove House opened to serve travelers heading to Sacramento and the gold mines in the foothills.
Over the next few decades, Elk Grove remained a small rural farming community. Things started to change in the 1960s and 70s when the suburb started growing rapidly.
