The city was created 203 years ago in 1820.

Bridgeport, Connecticut's largest city, has an interesting history. It was founded in 1639 and originally called Newfield. In 1659, it was renamed Fairfield Village. Finally, in 1821, the name was changed to Bridgeport after the construction of a bridge over the Pequonnock River.

Bridgeport rapidly industrialized in the mid-1800s. The city became a manufacturing hub, producing ammunition, sewing machines, corsets, railroad cars, and more. This industrial expansion led to major population growth.
