Avoyelles Parish is one of the original 19 civil parishes created by the Louisiana Legislature in 1807 during its first session. It was named for Marie-Thérèse Coincoin Avoyelles, daughter of Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville and his Choctaw wife.

The name Avoyelles comes from a French term meaning "black water snake". According to legend, there were once two rivers that met at this spot under a dark cloudless sky. A black water snake (or couleuvre) appeared on one bank and moved across to the other side. A few days later when a second traveler came along he saw it again swimming back across and thought it was magic so he named it "couleuvre noire" or black water snake."
