After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 277,681 inhabitants. Its county seat is Laredo. The county was created 178 years ago in 1848.

Webb County is located in southern Texas along the border with Mexico. As of the 2020 census, the population was 275,910 making it the 7th most populous county in Texas. The county seat is Laredo.

History

Early history

The county was established in 1848 and named after James Webb, who fought in the Mexican-American War. Laredo was designated as the county seat in 1850.

20th century

Webb County's economy relied on ranching early on. In the 1900s, bridge openings enhanced trade between Laredo and Mexico. The population grew steadily.

Economy

Trade

As the largest inland port on the US-Mexico border, international trade is a major part of Webb County's economy. The Laredo Port of Entry is the largest commercial crossing on the border.

Oil and gas

Oil and natural gas production is another big industry, as Webb County sits on part of the Eagle Ford Shale formation. Major pipelines transport energy products.

Manufacturing

There are sizable manufacturing operations, including automotive parts, plastics, and electronics assembly.
