Val Verde County is located in southwest Texas along the border with Mexico. As of the 2020 census, the population was 49,025 making it the 43rd most populous county in Texas. The county seat is Del Rio.
The county was established in 1885 and named after the Val Verde battlefield in the Civil War. Del Rio was founded that year and quickly became the county seat.
The economy was driven by agriculture and ranching early on. In the 1950s, Laughlin Air Force Base opened, bringing growth.
The economy relies heavily on Laughlin Air Force Base, which provides thousands of jobs.
Lake Amistad National Recreation Area attracts many visitors for fishing, boating, and camping. Del Rio sees lots of cross-border shoppers from Mexico.
Ranching and crop farming are still important economic activities. The main crops are pecans, hay, and wheat.
