In 1833, Portage Township was formed from part of LaPorte Township; it included all of what is now known as Porter County except for a small section around Duneland Beach State Park. In 1836, an act of the U.S Congress proclaimed that "the town of Portage" would be platted and laid out "in such manner as may be deemed most advantageous." The platting of this town was done by George Flower and James Maple on June 6th, 1836 with streets running parallel with the shoreline being wide and those running perpendicular being half as wide.

-Sugar Creek Park: This park offers hiking trails through wooded areas where hikers can see wildlife such as deer or foxes roaming freely throughout the park grounds without fear of being hunted by humans because they are protected under laws passed by Congress back in 1836!
