Jefferson is a city in Greene County, Iowa, United States. The population was 4,182 at the time of the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Greene County. It is the home of the Mahanay Memorial Bell Tower, 168 feet tall, located on the town square and visible for miles.
It is nestled between rolling hills and steep bluffs along the North Raccoon River. The main street of Jefferson runs parallel to the river and is lined with brick buildings dating back to its founding in 1858. The downtown area has many specialty shops including antique stores and jewelry stores, as well as local restaurants and bars. Jefferson is known for its German heritage and culture, which can be seen throughout town in architecture, festivals and events held throughout the year such as Oktoberfest held annually each October by local residents celebrating German heritage with music, food and drink served outside under tents set up on Main Street Park where people gather together to enjoy food while listening to bands perform live music entertaining visitors all day long!
