History
Pearland was established in 1893 as an agricultural community focused on pear orchards, grains, and cattle ranching. Into the 1960s it had only about 1,500 residents.
The nearby Johnson Space Center then spurred rapid suburban growth, especially as Houston expanded. Pearland incorporated as a city in 1959 and has seen its population boom since the 1970s.
Economy
Many residents commute to Houston for work, drawn by Pearland's quality schools, amenities, and more affordable housing. However, the city also has a strong economic base.
Major employers are the Pearland ISD, Walmart, Pearland Medical Center, City of Pearland, and Baker Hughes. New master-planned communities continue attracting families and businesses.

Pearland has over 50 public parks with amenities ranging from skate parks to disc golf. The Pearland Recreation Center & Natatorium is a sprawling new indoor sports complex.
