Lawrence is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States, on the Merrimack River. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 89,143. Surrounding communities include Methuen to the north, Andover to the southwest, and North Andover to the east.
The city is named after Amos Adams Lawrence (1792–1862), a prominent politician, merchant and industrialist who was one of seven entrepreneurs who founded Haverhill in 1845. Lawrence's first mill was set up on Turner's Falls in 1847. The mills employed about 7,000 people at their peak during World War II and were later used by General Electric for research and development before being sold in 2005. The city continues to be home to an abundance of manufacturing companies including several precision tool shops which produce parts for Boeing jets among other products.
Lawrence was an important center for textile manufacturing from its founding until World War II; its access to water power and labor made it competitive with larger cities for much of that time. After the war, with new investment in modern machinery, it became one of America's most productive textile centers; however foreign competition led to closure of all but one mill by 2000.
The city has repeatedly been ranked as one of America's most diverse cities by U.S. News & World Report. It was a favorite destination for immigrants from Ireland, Italy and Eastern Europe at the beginning of the 20th century; there are thus many Irish pubs; Italian restaurants serving standard American cuisine with an Italian twist; Polish delicatessens; and Russian stores all over the city. The five largest ethnic groups in Lawrence according to U.S. Census data from 2000 are Irish (19%), Italian (14%), English (13%),
