Killeen is a city located in the county of Bell in the U.S. state of Texas. Its population at the 2010 census was 127,921 and a population density of 911 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 153,991 inhabitants.

The city was created 154 years ago in 1871.

Killeen is a city located in Central Texas, about 60 miles north of Austin. With over 153,000 residents, it is the largest city in Bell County and anchors a rapidly growing metro area. Killeen is adjacent to the military post of Fort Hood.

History

Killeen was founded as a railroad stop by the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway in 1881. It was named after Frank P. Killeen, a director of the railroad company. Killeen later became an agricultural trade center for area cotton farmers and ranchers.

The opening of Camp Hood in 1942 significantly impacted the city’s future growth. The military base required thousands of civilian service workers. Killeen incorporated as a city in 1949.

Influence of Fort Hood

Today, Fort Hood remains indispensable to the local Killeen economy. The sprawling military base provides over 45,000 local jobs and has fueled Killeen’s population boom.

Many businesses cater to serving military staff and families. Killeen also hosts the Fort Hood National Cemetery.
