Berkeley is a city on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay in northern California. As home to the University of California, Berkeley, it is the principal city of the East Bay region.
History
Berkeley was incorporated as a town in 1878 and named for Irish philosopher George Berkeley. It was chosen as the site of the University of California in 1866, spurring growth.
Berkeley later became a center of counterculture and student activism in the 1960s. This shaped its identity as a socially progressive and intellectual enclave in the Bay Area.
Today the city is known for progressive politics, innovation, academic excellence, culture, and arts – trademark “Berkeley” values.
