Hayward is a city located in the county of Alameda in the U.S. state of California. Its population at the 2010 census was 144,186. After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 157,966 inhabitants.

The city was created 148 years ago in 1876.

Hayward is a city located in Alameda County, California along the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay. With over 155,000 residents, it is one of the major cities that make up the San Francisco Bay Area. Hayward lies about 25 miles southeast of Oakland.

Early History

The Hayward area was originally home to the Ohlone Native American tribe before being settled by Spanish missionaries in the late 18th century. American settlers later established a township called Haywood which would eventually become Hayward.

Hayward was incorporated as a city in 1876. In the late 19th century, it became an important agricultural and transportation hub for the region.

Development of Industry

In the post-WWII era, Hayward saw significant population growth and rapid development. Food processing, semiconductor manufacturing, and warehousing became major industries. Companies like Hunt Brothers Cannery put Hayward on the map.

Hayward’s central location along Interstate 880 made it attractive as a growing suburb. The population boomed in the late 20th century.
