Granger is a city located in the county of Saint Joseph in the U.S. state of Indiana.
Granger is a census-designated place in Clay and Harris townships, St. Joseph County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 30,465 at the 2010 census. Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation and the South Bend Community School Corporation maintain the public schools in the area.
The town has a golf course and an indoor water park, which was built in 2005 by developers who were involved with Granger from its inception as a subdivision in 1885. The original name for this community was "Lincoln," after President Abraham Lincoln; however, there already was another community named Lincoln in Indiana at that time (now known as Lincolnton).
In its early years the town grew slowly with several commercial buildings being built along Main Street (now State Road 933). In 1890, there were only five houses in town. But growth accelerated during the next decade. By 1900 there were 200 residents, and by 1915 that number had nearly doubled to 400. The population reached 1,000 by 1920, and 2,000 by 1930. The Great Depression hit Granger hard; by 1940 its population had fallen back down to 1,500. However
The name "Granger" was chosen to honor an early resident named Isaac Granger whose family owned most of the land around what would become Granger. It was incorporated as a town on January 7, 1907 by an act of the Indiana General Assembly; it adopted its present form of government on April 1, 1963 through another act of the legislature.
