Franklin County lies in the Roanoke Valley region of southwest Virginia. It was formed in 1785 from parts of Bedford and Henry Counties. Here are some notable cities and towns in Franklin County:
Rocky Mount is the county seat of Franklin County. It was established in 1799 and named for its location near a rocky mount pass through the Blue Ridge Mountains. Some landmarks in Rocky Mount include the Franklin County Courthouse, Briarwood, and Franklin County Historical Society Museum.
Boones Mill is a small town located along the Blackwater River. It was named after Jacob Boone who built a mill there in the 1840s. The Boones Mill Apple Festival is held there every fall featuring local apples, cider, arts & crafts and more.
Ferrum is home to Ferrum College, a private liberal arts school founded in 1913. The town hosts the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival each October celebrating local music, food and crafts. Ferrum is surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
