Burnet County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 42,750 and a population density of 16 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 county had an estimated population of 49,653 inhabitants. Its county seat is Burnet. The county was created 174 years ago in 1852.
Burnet County sits in the Hill Country region of central Texas, northwest of Austin. It was established in 1852 from parts of Bell County and named for David G. Burnet, president of the Republic of Texas.
The area was settled in the 1850s as German immigrants arrived, establishing farms and ranches. Early settlers raised cattle and sheep, growing cotton and wheat. Granite quarrying became an important local industry starting in the late 1800s.
