The Woodlands is a master-planned community located about 30 miles north of downtown Houston. It was established in 1974 by George Mitchell of Mitchell Energy. The goal was to create an eco-friendly, forested community with jobs, housing and recreation.
Development of The Woodlands began in 1975 and continued in phases over the next decades. By the early 2000s, over 60,000 people lived in The Woodlands. In 2007, it was officially incorporated as a town.
