History
The area was inhabited by Native American tribes like the Dakota and Lakota before European settlers arrived in the mid-19th century. The first permanent settlement was established in 1856 and named after the waterfalls on the Big Sioux River.
Sioux Falls grew quickly during the late 1800s and early 1900s as the railroads expanded across the region. It became a center for agricultural processing and meatpacking.
