Odessa was founded in 1881 as a water stop and cattle shipping point for the Texas and Pacific Railway. The discovery of oil in 1923 led to Odessa’s rapid growth and emergence as a major drilling hub.

By World War II, Odessa was one of the leading oil producers in Texas. Even through recent oil busts, Odessa remains vitally important to U.S. energy output.

Oil and gas production dominate Odessa's economy and workforce. Many residents work for drilling and pipeline companies or oilfield services providers. Major employers include EOG Resources and Halliburton.

The University of Texas Permian Basin and Odessa College also offer education and technical training supporting the energy sector. Healthcare is another major industry in the city.

A frontier oil town spirit still permeates Odessa, which hosts annual events like Rodeos and Permian Basin Oil Shows. The Ector Theatre and MCM Grande FunDome offer family entertainment options.

UTPB Falcons college sports are popular, as is golf at Odessa’s Ratliff Ranch Golf Links. Parks and recreational sites provide outdoor activities in the semi-arid climate.

Odessa’s fortunes have long been tied to oil booms and busts. But with resilient people rooted in Texas grit, Odessa continues to power the nation’s energy needs while providing an authentic western lifestyle.
