The town's name comes from its location between two different bodies of water; the Christina River and the Delaware River meet at Middletown's northern border. The town has seen many changes over the centuries—from its founding as a port town in 1697 to a center for shipbuilding during World War II—but it's still one of Delaware's most vibrant communities today.

Middletown is located at 39°40′12″N 75°11′19″W (39.677874, -75.186097). It is about 30 miles south of Wilmington and about 10 miles north of Newark.
