Vallejo is a waterfront city located in Solano County, California, situated on the northeastern shore of San Pablo Bay. With a population of over 121,000, it is the largest city in Solano County.

History

Vallejo was founded in 1851, named after General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, an early Californian statesman. It served as California’s first capital city from 1852-1853 before eventually moving to Sacramento.

The Mare Island Naval Shipyard opened in 1854, fueling Vallejo’s early development. It was a major naval base for over 100 years through wars and economic shifts.

Economy

Today the local economy is anchored by healthcare, retail, tourism, education, and manufacturing. Largest employers are Kaiser Permanente Medical Center and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.

The city has a growing arts community and boasts popular waterfront destinations like the Vallejo Ferry Terminal and Mare Island Historic District.
