Springfield is a city located in western Massachusetts along the Connecticut River. With a population of over 150,000, it is the 3rd largest city in Massachusetts after Boston and Worcester. Springfield serves as the economic and cultural hub for the western part of the state.
History
Springfield was founded in 1636 and grew quickly as a trading post due to its key position on the Connecticut River. It earned nicknames like “The City of Firsts” for innovations such as the first American-English dictionary and the first gasoline-powered automobile.
For a time, Springfield was even considered for the state capital instead of Boston due to its important transportation links. While that didn't happen, Springfield did flourish over the centuries as a manufacturing center known for weapons like the Springfield Rifle.
Education and Business
Today, Springfield is home to Springfield College and Western New England University along with financial companies like MassMutual Insurance.
