Roanoke is an independent city located in the heart of southwest Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. As of 2019, Roanoke had a population of around 99,572 residents.
History
The Roanoke area was first settled in the mid-1700s. The town of Big Lick emerged as a stop along the Great Wagon Road.
The arrival of the railroad in 1852 helped establish Roanoke as a commercial hub. Roanoke was formally incorporated in 1884.
