Nicholasville is a city located in the county of Jessamine in the U.S. state of Kentucky. Its population at the 2010 census was 28,015 and a population density of 776 people per km². After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 30,888 inhabitants.
The city was created 189 years ago in 1837.
Nicholasville is a city in Jessamine County, Kentucky. It is the county seat of Jessamine County and the 11th largest settlement in the state.
The city was founded in 1799 as Fort Nelson. It was named for General William Nicholas, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1847, it became known as Nicholsville after its postmaster, John Nichols. The name was changed to Nicholasville in 1849.
In 1853, Nicholasville became the first city in Kentucky to be powered by hydroelectric power generated by water from a dam on the Salt River.
In 1954, the city's high school football team won its first state championship under head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. The Bear Bryant Museum is located in downtown Nicholasville and houses memorabilia from his coaching career at several colleges including Alabama and Texas A&M University.
The city is home to Barrett & Co. School of Hair Design.
