Manteno is a village in Kankakee County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,204 at the 2010 census, up from 6,414 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kankakee-Bourbonnais-Bradley Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Manteno was founded by Alexander Stillwell and his family in 1848; they named it after the city of Mantua in Italy. The town has been home to several other famous names, including President James A. Garfield (who practiced law here), John L. Sullivan (a professional boxer) and Al Capone (who worked as a bouncer at a local nightclub).
Today, Manteno is known as an agricultural community that boasts one of the largest high school enrollments in Illinois (over 1,400 students).
