History
The area was inhabited by the Creek Native American tribe before being settled by European colonists in the early 1800s. Macon was officially founded in 1823 as a frontier town arising from the newly built Fort Hawkins.
Macon grew rapidly prior to the Civil War as a cotton trading and transport hub. It was spared from destruction during the war. The city continued expanding through the 19th and 20th centuries as a business, cultural, and industrial center in Georgia.
