The city was created 138 years ago in 1887.

Kirkland is a city located along the eastern shore of Lake Washington in King County, Washington.

The land was first settled by Native Americans, followed by pioneers who arrived in the 1870s. Logging was an early industry in the area.

Kirkland was founded by residents Peter and Mary Kirk in 1888 when they purchased land and named the settlement after their family. It grew as a small frontier community.

In 1905, Kirkland was officially incorporated as a township with about 300 residents. It remained a small town for much of the 20th century.

In recent decades, Kirkland has become a rapidly growing edge city in the Seattle metro area.
