History
The Kent area was first settled in the 1860s by pioneers attracted to the rich farmland near the Green River. Hops production and coal mining played an early role in the local economy.
Kent was officially incorporated in 1890 with the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Early industry focused on lumber, brickmaking, and food processing.
Rapid suburban growth took place after World War II as population shifted out of Seattle. Aerospace manufacturing facilities opened in Kent bringing jobs and economic development.
Economy
Kent has a diverse economy today focused on warehousing, manufacturing, healthcare, retail, and services. Major employers include Boeing, REI, Sysco, Oberto Sausage Company, and the Highline School District.
The city has large warehouse and distribution centers for companies like Amazon, FedEx Ground, and IKEA attracted by Kent's location and transportation infrastructure.
