The city was created 55 years ago in 1970.
Irvine was officially incorporated as a city in 1971. It was developed as a planned community surrounding the new University of California, Irvine campus, which opened in 1965.
The planning and development company the Irvine Company master-planned the city’s layout and growth. Irvine grew rapidly starting in the 1970s due to the area's affordable housing, good schools, and job growth.
