Mission Viejo is a city located in the county of Orange in the U.S. state of California. Its population at the 2010 census was 93,305. After 10 years in 2020 city had an estimated population of 94,242 inhabitants.

Mission Viejo is located in southern Orange County, California. It was developed as a planned community by the Mission Viejo Company starting in the 1960s and incorporated as a city in 1988. The name Mission Viejo comes from Rancho Mission Viejo, a large Spanish land grant ranch.

During the city's early development, homes were marketed to young professionals and families. Major growth took place through the 1970s and 1980s. The population surpassed 100,000 by 2000 making Mission Viejo the largest planned community in the U.S.
