Escondido is a city located in northern San Diego County, just 35 miles northeast of downtown San Diego. With a population of over 150,000, it is the sixth largest city in San Diego County. Escondido sits inland from the Pacific Ocean.
History
The Escondido area was originally inhabited by the Luiseño Native American tribe. Europeans settled the area in the early 1800s when it was part of Mexico. American settlers later established the town of Escondido in 1888 shortly after the railroad arrived.
Escondido incorporated as a city in 1888 and grew as an agricultural community known for producing grapes and citrus fruits.
Economy and Tourism
While agriculture is still important, Escondido's economy has diversified over the decades. Major employers include Palo Alto Medical Foundation and California Center for the Arts.
